Getting on the road

There are a number of steps to climb before passing the practical test. Hopefully the information can lend some support on what to expect.

Step 1 - Apply for your provisional licence through the DVLA website - It can take 3-4 weeks for this to come through and you won't be able start lessons until you've received it, so make sure you arrange this well in advance of your first lesson.

Step 2 - Book your lessons - ideally with me.

Step 3 - Start revising for your theory test. Ideally make a start on this before the first lesson so you have some basic knowledge of road markings and signs when you first start to drive, using the DVSA source materials together with an App to test yourself. As soon as you're ready, look to book the test as there can be a wait time of several weeks. The theory test is made up of 2 sections: 50 multiple choice questions (43 correct answers are required to pass) and 15 hazard perception videos (pass rate is a score of 44 out of 75).

Step 4 - Undertake regular driving lessons. Everyone learns at their own speed so please don't compare yourself to friends or family. The DVSA state the average student requires 40 hours of lessons plus at least 20 or more hours of practice. Practice (like any physical task eg. learning a musical instrument, playing a sport, etc) will bring on your learning leaps and bounds, reducing the time until your test ready.

Step 5 - Book the practical test. The DVSA is running their 'Ready to Pass?' campaign which outlines when you can expect to be ready to take your practical test. Lessons plus plenty of practice will provide you with the best chance of passing first time.

Step 6 - Take the practical test. After all the hard work, you're ready to take the test. Don't worry, the examiners just want to check you're a safe driver who can drive independently. The test lasts around 35-40mins and as long as you don't carry out an unsafe act (causing a serious or dangerous fault) or tot up more than 15 driver faults, then you'll walk away with a pass, and freedom on the roads is yours!
